Arnold J. Nothem, age 88 of Port Washington, Wisconsin passed away peacefully Wednesday, March 8, 2023 just 8 days shy of his 89th birthday.

Born in the Town of Belgium, Wisconsin on March 16, 1934, Arnie was the son of Mathias and Clara (Bode) Nothem.  He grew up on the family farm, one of eleven children.

On January 8, 1955, Arnie married Rosemary Resch of Milwaukee, at St. Joseph’s Church in Grafton later moving to Port Washington.  He served in the Army National Guard from 1952 until April of 1960.

Growing up on the farm, Arnie became very handy.  There was almost nothing he couldn’t fix.  In his youth he worked as a carpenter, later transitioning to a welder.  His final place of work was at Builders Hardware in Menomonee Falls making windows and doors before retiring in 2000.

At home he had a house full of kids but he still found time for hunting and fishing.  He loved his Friday Fish Fries, playing cards and going up north with family and friends.  He found special joy teaching his grandkids how to fish.  He was very particular of his yard and loved to garden.  Bowling, trap shooting and snowmobiling were also some of his life hobbies.  Arnie was always available for his family and friends in their time of need.  Helping with farm repairs, fixing cars, and home projects were a regular routine for Arnie along with lots of jokes and side comments that would make you laugh.

His wife of 68 years, Rosemary, preceded him in death on January 20, 2023.

He is survived by his children Renee (Nothem) and Salvatore Mirto; Paul and Janet (Lisowicz) Nothem; John Nothem and Ann Paremske; Dale and Shari (Wauer) Nothem; Scott and Jill (Prom) Nothem; and Susan (Nothem) and Bryan Deal.  He is further survived by his grandchildren Nichole Schulze, Robin Schulze and Nicholas Becks, Dr. Andrew (Katherine) Nothem, Dr. Meghan Nothem, Aimee Coronado, Jonathan Nothem (Michelle Ehrlich), Justin Nothem, Samantha (Steven) Langjahr, Whitney Nothem, Isaac Nothem, Thane (Heather) Nothem, Tyler (Jeannette) Nothem, Kara Nothem, Xavier Deal, and Hudson Deal; 9 great-grandchildren; brother Harold and Arlene Nothem, brother-in-law Ronald and Ceil Resch, many, many nieces and nephews, cousins, and grand nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

  1. I have so many fond memories of Uncle Arnie and Aunt Rosie. My family relocated to Ashtabula, Ohio when I was very young. Most of my memories were from our vacations and many family events when we traveled to Wisconsin. Any Nothem family gathering was LARGE, boisterous, and included great food. Most of all they were fun. Uncle Arnie was a big part of the fun. He was a jokester and also very loving. He will be greatly missed. My husband, Fred and I send our deepest sympathy to Renee, Paul, John, Dale, Scott and Susan. We love you all.
