Michael J. Sommer, 55, of S. Milwaukee Street in Fredonia, died August 6, 2014 after a courageous battle with cancer.
He was born July 9, 1959 to Roland and Ruth (nee Wick) Sommer in Mequon, Wisconsin. He graduated from Homestead High School in Mequon in 1977. All he ever wanted to be was a farmer. He farmed in Ozaukee County his entire life. Farming was not a job for him; it was his passion.
Michael married Joan Mann of Racine Wisconsin on June 21, 1985 in Racine. Together they made their home in Fredonia. He adored his nieces and nephews and loved spending time with them; teaching and sharing with them his knowledge and passions. Mike was a loving husband, a great uncle, and a good, good man. He was always willing to lend a hand to friends and strangers. In his free time, Mike enjoyed beekeeping, growing pumpkins, and helping Joan with her bluebird trail.
He is survived by his wife Joan of Fredonia, mother Ruth Sommer of Cedarburg and siblings Ronald (Mary) Sommer of the Town of Fredonia, Susan (Mike) Wigderson of Florida, Russell (Bonnie) Sommer of Rockfield, Wisconsin, Sally Sommer and Sharon Sommer both of Cedarburg. Further survived by mother-in-law Patricia Mann of Racine, sisters-in-law Susan Hanna and Karen (Terry) Wallace – Massey, nieces and nephews Martin, Beej, Jim, Jason, Sara, Ashley, Paul, Stephanie, James, Elana and Amy, great nieces and nephews Kathryn, Katelyn, Hannah, Blake, Lili, Emily, Ethan, Saxon, Odyn, Ulli, Freyja, and Caylee, other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his father.
The Reverend Todd Budde will officiate Memorial Services 6 pm Tuesday, August 12, 2014 at the Poole Funeral Home. Time of gathering will be from 5 pm to 6 pm Tuesday at the funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials to the American Cancer Society or the Ozaukee Washington Land Trust are appreciated.
The family would like to extend its heartfelt gratitude to the Columbia St. Mary’s Ozaukee Cancer Center and Horizon Hospice for all their care and support through Mike’s illness.
