Eileen Redig, age 90, of Port Washington, passed into God’s hands on January 15, at Lincoln Village in Port Washington following a courageous two-year battle with cancer. Eileen was born March 24, 1930 in the Town of Port Washington.

Above all else, she was a loving and caring mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Family meant everything to her. She is survived by her children Bonnie (Marion) Taccone of Tucson, Ariz., Susette (Gerry) Ford of Wauwatosa, Wis., Bill (Carrie) Krier of Des Moines, Iowa, and Steve Krier of Waubeka, Wis., as well as nine grandchildren Patrick (Jill) Ford, Rob Ford, Matthew Taccone, Thomas Taccone, Rachel Krier, Nicole Laing, Sydney Krier, Lauren and Ella Krier and their mother Shawna Dart Krier. Four great-grandchildren Collette and Lillian Ford, and Lillian and Eleanor Taccone, also survive her.

Her unequivocal love was expressed in many ways. She showed kindness, humility, and humor to all she met. Her home cooking was without parallel. Her creativity and considerable knitting, sewing, and quilting skills were shared freely with all around her. Her children were amply supplied with hand-knitted caps, scarves, mittens, sweaters, and slippers. She sewed everything imaginable on her faithful Pfaff sewing machine. Until the time her hands could no longer manage it, she crafted a great many quilts for kindergartners at Brown Street Academy in Milwaukee.

Eileen had great taste in all things, especially fashion. She assisted customers at the Young Port Fashions and Lucille’s in Port Washington, as well as Kate Strassman’s Pendleton stores in Port Washington and the Milwaukee area. She later owned and operated the Stonecroft Candy Shop. Right up until her last weeks, no one escaped her home without a treat from one of her candy jars.

Eileen married Bill Krier at St. Mary’s Church in Port Washington on October 25, 1952. Following Bill’s death in 1968 she later married Walter Redig, now deceased. She was a long-time member of St. Mary’s, St. Peter of Alcantara, and St. John XXIII parishes. She is preceded in death by her parents Nic and Helen Bley, and sister Mary Niederkorn. Surviving her are brothers Leroy (and late Joan) Bley, and Nic (Pat) Bley, and sisters-in-law Audrey Schmidt and Sister Regine Redig. Eileen is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews. Seeing so many of them in her final years brought her great joy.

Her family offers boundless thanks to the nurses and other professionals at St. Croix Hospice who offered her such outstanding compassion and care. In accordance with her wishes, she will be cremated at Poole Funeral Home, followed by a private gathering of immediate family. A larger celebration of her life is planned for late summer.

If you wish to honor her memory, be kind to someone. And tell those closest to you how much you love them. Eileen would like that.
