Arlene L. Henke, age 96, formerly of Appleton, WI died peacefully Monday March 22, 2021 at Auberge Assisted Living in Brookfield, WI where she has resided the past four months.
Arlene was born June 18, 1924 in the town of Greenville, WI the daughter of the late Erwin and Edna (Schroeder) Palmbach. She was received into Christ’s Kingdom of Grace through Holy Baptism on July 20, 1924 and after being instructed in the truths of God’s Word, she was confirmed on September 5, 1937 at Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church in Greenville, WI.
On August 9, 1947 Arlene was united in marriage to Gilbert H. Henke and celebrated 67 years together until Gilbert’s death in 2014. Together they settled in Appleton where they made their home for many years.
In her younger years, Arlene worked at the Fox River Knitting Mill for ten years and later in life she spent fourteen years assisting with the lunch program at Fox Valley Lutheran High School (FVL). She also helped with mailings at FVL and was a former member of the FVL Ladies’ Guild.
Arlene was a volunteer at her church for many years helping with mailings and preparing and sending contribution statements to members. She was a member of the Dorcas Society. She was also a long term volunteer at the Bargain Garden Thrift Shop.
She enjoyed her large flower and vegetable garden and spent many hours tending to the garden and canning and freezing the fruits of her labor for use during the winter months.
Arlene is survived by her son Steven (Julie) Henke of New Berlin, WI, her grandchildren Elizabeth Henke of Pooler, GA and David (Alyssa) Henke of Milwaukee, WI; her sisters-in-law Donna Palmbach and Dorothy Henke, both of Appleton, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Gilbert, her parents and parents-in-law, a sister Letha Broehm, two brothers, Earl and Gerald Palmbach, brothers-in-law Clifford Broehm and Harley Henke.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday April 10, 2021 at St. Matthew Evangelical Lutheran Church, 129 S. Mason Street, Appleton. Visitation Saturday 10:00 am to 11:00 am prior to the service at the Church. Interment will take place at Appleton Highland Memorial Park in Appleton.
In lieu of flowers, memorials to St. Matthew Church or Fox Valley Lutheran High School, 5300 Meade Street, Appleton are appreciated.
