Arnold E. Dohrwardt, 90, of S. Milwaukee Street in Fredonia, died Sunday, March 18, 2007 at Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital – Ozaukee Campus in Mequon.
He was born August 1, 1916 in West Bend, Wisconsin to Henry and Kunnie Leer Dohrwardt. He served in the US Army during World War Two as a Maintenance Sergeant in Europe, overhauling tanks and automotive equipment. Through the years he held various jobs. He helped work the Old Bley Farm on West Grand Avenue in Port Washington for many years; then began work as an upholsterer for the former Wisconsin Chair Company in Port Washington., from 1936 to 1941. He worked the Smith Bros. Tugs and operated a restaurant at the corner of East Washington and Franklin Streets in Port Washington before selling it to the Kratzer family. Arnie then began work for the City of Port Washington Street Department in 1948 as a Heavy Equipment Operator and retired in 1982. He was a past union president for the City Workers Union. From 1950’s to 1970’s he also operated Arnie’s Tree Service.
His pride and joy was his 3.5 acre garden in Fredonia. Well into his 80�s, he sold organic vegetables at his home and the Port Washington Farmer’s Market. He will be fondly remembered for his wonderful and large vegetables.
He is survived by his children David Dohrwardt of Milwaukee, WI, Donald (Lisa) Dohrwardt of Fredonia, Delores “Dolly” (Todd) Mullins of Keensburg, IL, Darlene Harvey of Fond du Lac, WI and Darrell (Debbie) Dohrwardt of Saukville. Further survived by 14 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by two sisters Hazel Katchever and Dolores Lemke, his brother Quentin Dohrwardt, grandson Jason D’mperio and great-granddaughter Taylor Dohrwardt.
A graveside service will be held at 1:30PM Monday, March 26 at Union Cemetery, Chestnut and Keeny Streets, Port Washington. Pastor Mark Voll of Friedens Evangelical Church, Port Washington will be the officiant with military honors by the Ozaukee Memorial Post 5373 Veterans of Foreign Wars. Memorials to the charity of your choice appreciated.
